The Cerwin-Vega CVM3 is a 2-channel bass maximizer processor designed to shape and restore low-frequency information before it reaches the next component in a car audio system. It is intended for systems that need more control over bass response than a source unit or amplifier adjustment alone can provide. RCA inputs and outputs allow it to be installed in the signal path ahead of an amplifier, equalizer, or crossover.

Its bass driver circuit recreates low-frequency content and adds it back into the signal path, while the bass equalization circuit contours the restored bass for the connected speaker system. A Sweep control selects the center frequency affected by the restoration circuit, and a Wide control adjusts the range of frequencies it influences. This makes the CVM3 suitable for tailoring bass character to the vehicle, music, subwoofer system, and enclosure.

The CVM3 supports signals up to 15V RMS at its balanced differential RCA inputs and provides up to 13.2V peak output. Its high-headroom PWM power supply, 133 dB signal-to-noise ratio, and 0.0025% THD specification support clean signal handling within a properly configured system. The processor is designed for use with a full-range source signal.

A wired dash-mount remote controller brings bass adjustment closer to the driver. Its LED indicator becomes brighter as bass effect is increased and dimmer as it is reduced. The processor also includes master volume, sub volume, bass output, Sweep, Wide, and adjustable subsonic controls for system-specific setup.

For subwoofer upgrades, the CVM3 fits between an RCA-equipped source or signal chain and the downstream crossover, equalizer, or amplifier. The manual specifies placing it before any crossover because it needs a full-range signal to operate properly. It can be a useful addition when building a dedicated bass section around a compatible amplifier and subwoofer system.

Key Features

  • 2-Channel RCA Signal Path: Uses RCA preamp inputs and outputs for in-line system integration.
  • Bass Driver Circuit: Recreates and injects low-frequency information into the audio signal.
  • Sweep And Wide Controls: Adjust bass restoration center frequency and affected frequency range.
  • Adjustable Subsonic Control: Sets the subsonic frequency from 35 Hz to 120 Hz.
  • Dash-Mount Remote: Provides in-car bass adjustment with an LED level indicator.
  • Balanced Differential Inputs: Help minimize induced noise in the RCA signal path.

Design & Installation

The CVM3 uses a compact processor layout with RCA signal connections, a power connector, onboard bass controls, and a separate wired dash-mount remote controller. Cerwin-Vega does not publish a chassis-material specification. Its design includes balanced differential RCA inputs, a high-headroom PWM power supply, and selectable internal output and isolation settings for qualified installers.

Connect the RCA outputs to the next component after the processor, such as an amplifier, equalizer, or crossover, and feed the CVM3 a full-range signal. Power wiring requires 12V B+, chassis ground, and a 12V remote turn-on lead; the manual advises placing the processor before any device with a crossover. Set the processor conservatively at first, then match its output setting and controls to the amplifier input voltage and connected subwoofer system.
