The Rockford Fosgate PMX-5CAN is a marine and powersports digital media receiver designed to serve as the central control point for an onboard audio system. It combines AM/FM/weather-band radio with USB, auxiliary, Bluetooth, Pandora, and optional SiriusXM sources in a compact Single DIN-style format. Its 2.7-inch color TFT display and physical controls provide direct access to music and system settings without relying on a touchscreen device.

This receiver is suited to boats and outdoor vehicles where water exposure, vibration, sun, and changing temperatures are practical concerns. The IPX6-rated front panel, water-resistant rotary encoder, and stainless-steel rear chassis support use in exposed marine environments. It is also designed for systems that need a readable display and accessible controls at the helm or dashboard.

The integrated amplifier delivers 25 watts RMS per channel into 4-ohm speakers, allowing compatible speakers to be connected directly to the receiver. For more demanding systems, 4-volt RCA outputs support external amplifiers for front, rear, subwoofer, and Zone 2 channels. A 7-band EQ, Punch EQ, selectable crossovers, source-gain adjustment, and independent subwoofer control provide useful tuning options.

True two-zone, two-source operation allows separate areas of a boat or vehicle to use different sources when configured for independent operation. Zone settings can also lock Zone 2 to Zone 1 when a shared source is preferred. This flexibility makes the PMX-5CAN useful for systems with separate cockpit, cabin, deck, or passenger-area listening zones.

The PMX-5CAN adds CAN bus capability for compatible multifunction-display integration when used with the optional Rockford Fosgate PMX-CAN interface. It also accepts up to three compatible wired remotes, making secondary control possible away from the main receiver. Whether used with its internal amplifier or as a source unit for external amplification, it provides a scalable foundation for a marine audio upgrade.

Key Features

  • Two-Zone, Two-Source Control: Operate separate listening areas independently or link them together.
  • Built-In Four-Channel Amplifier: Powers compatible speakers directly without an external amplifier.
  • 4-Volt RCA Outputs: Supports external amplifiers for larger, higher-output audio systems.
  • AM/FM/Weather-Band Tuner: Provides entertainment radio and weather-band reception.
  • Bluetooth, USB, and AUX Playback: Connect phones, portable devices, and supported USB media.
  • CAN Bus Expandability: Works with the optional PMX-CAN interface for compatible MFD control.

Design & Installation

The PMX-5CAN uses a 2.7-inch color TFT display with a water-resistant rotary encoder and white LED button illumination. Its front panel is rated IPX6, while the rear chassis is stainless steel for marine-oriented durability. The receiver includes display dimming options and front-mounted subwoofer-level controls for practical day or night operation.

Installation requires a flat mounting surface with clearance behind the panel for the receiver body, harnesses, and connected cables. The specified panel cutout is 7 by 2.1 inches (180 by 52 mm), and the supplied mounting plate and back strap are used to secure the unit. Connect speakers directly to the internal amplifier or use the RCA outputs with external amplifiers; the optional PMX-CAN interface, SiriusXM tuner, remotes, antenna, and related cables should be planned separately as needed.
