The Hertz MLK1650-3 Mille Legend is a 6.5-inch two-way component speaker system designed for front-stage car-audio upgrades. It separates mid-bass and high-frequency reproduction between dedicated woofers and tweeters, using external passive crossovers to direct the appropriate frequencies to each driver. This arrangement is suited to listeners building a more detailed, properly staged system than a coaxial-speaker installation provides.

The kit combines ML 1650.3 woofers with ML 280.3 Tetolon-dome tweeters and MLCX 2 TW.3 crossover networks. Its 4-ohm system impedance, 150-watt continuous power handling, and 300-watt peak rating make it appropriate for use with a suitably matched aftermarket amplifier. The system is intended to cover the critical front-stage range from mid-bass through treble.

The woofer uses a pressed-pulp cone with cotton fibers and an exponential V-Cone profile. These materials and geometry are designed to maintain controlled midrange behavior while providing useful mid-bass output from a 6.5-inch driver. A Boundary Free IIR rubber surround increases the active cone area relative to a conventional surround profile.

The 35 mm ML 280.3 tweeter uses a Tetolon fiber dome, neodymium motor, and die-cast aluminum faceplate. Its compact mounting format supports flush installation where a dedicated factory or custom tweeter location is available. The included crossover provides selectable tweeter-level adjustment as well as Hi-Boost, Mid-Contour, and Hi-Contour controls for tailoring the response to placement and vehicle acoustics.

The MLCX 2 TW.3 crossover also supports a selectable bi-amplified configuration. In this setup, separate amplifier channels can feed the woofer and tweeter sections through the crossover network. This makes the MLK1650-3 a flexible choice for a conventional component-speaker installation now or a more involved amplified system later.

Key Features

  • Two-Way Component System: Separates woofer and tweeter duties for a focused front-stage installation.
  • 150W Continuous Handling: Supports use with a properly matched aftermarket amplifier.
  • Pressed-Pulp Cotton-Fiber Cone: Balances low moving mass with controlled cone behavior.
  • Boundary Free Rubber Surround: Expands usable cone area for mid-bass performance.
  • MLCX 2 TW.3 Crossover: Provides passive filtering and selectable response adjustments.
  • Selectable Bi-Amplification: Allows separate amplifier channels for woofer and tweeter sections.

Design & Installation

The ML 1650.3 woofer uses a neodymium magnet, low-carbon CNC-machined plates, an aluminum-covered pole, and a 36 mm CCAW dual-layer voice coil on a polyamide former. Its three-spoke aluminum-alloy basket includes venting holes, while the supplied grille uses die-cast aluminum construction. The ML 280.3 tweeter combines a Tetolon fiber dome, neodymium motor, and die-cast aluminum faceplate.

Confirm vehicle-specific fitment before purchase, including the woofer cutout, mounting depth, door-panel clearance, and a suitable location for each crossover. Install the passive crossovers between the amplifier or head-unit speaker output and the individual woofer/tweeter drivers, observing marked polarity. For bi-amplified use, move the crossover's bi-amplification selector to ON and connect separate amplifier channels to the woofer and tweeter inputs as shown in the Hertz instructions.
