The Hertz DPK165-3 is a 6.5-inch, 2-way component speaker system designed for upgrading factory front-stage speakers with separately mounted woofers, tweeters, and passive crossovers. Its 4-ohm design works with compatible aftermarket amplifiers or car-stereo power, while its 80-watt RMS system rating provides useful headroom for a properly matched installation. The separate-driver layout allows the tweeters to be positioned higher in the cabin than door-mounted coaxial speakers.

This set is intended for listeners who want clearer vocal placement and more controlled midrange response from a conventional 6.5-inch speaker location. The 165 mm DPV 165.3 woofer uses a water-repellent pressed-paper cone and a V-cone profile intended to support off-axis listening in vehicle doors. Its stated 45 Hz to 23 kHz system frequency response covers low bass, midrange, and high-frequency detail within a component setup.

A 26 mm DPT 26.3 soft Tetolon dome tweeter handles upper-frequency reproduction. The tweeter's 1.5 kHz resonance frequency supports use with the supplied passive crossover network, which divides the signal at 5 kHz. Separating the high-frequency driver from the woofer also gives installers flexibility to aim the tweeters toward the listening area.

The DPCX 2.3 external crossover uses a 6 dB/octave low-pass section for the woofer and a 12 dB/octave high-pass section for the tweeter, both at 5 kHz. Its vented enclosure and gold-plated terminal block provide dedicated connection points for amplifier input, woofer output, and tweeter output. This keeps frequency-routing components outside the speaker baskets for a more traditional component-system layout.

The DPK165-3 can serve as a front-speaker upgrade in a system using a compatible head unit or external amplifier. With 93 dB SPL sensitivity and 4-ohm nominal impedance, it is suited to installations where amplifier power and mounting depth have been checked before purchase. A subwoofer may be added separately when deeper low-frequency output is desired.

Key Features

  • 6.5-Inch Component System: Separate woofers, tweeters, and crossovers support flexible front-stage placement.
  • 80W RMS Handling: Supports compatible amplification up to 80 watts continuous per system rating.
  • Tetolon Dome Tweeter: A 26 mm soft dome handles high-frequency reproduction.
  • V-Cone Woofer: Woofer profile is designed to support smooth off-axis midrange response.
  • External DPCX 2.3 Crossover: Routes bass and treble frequencies to their respective drivers.
  • Water-Repellent Paper Cone: Pressed-paper woofer cone is made for automotive speaker applications.

Design & Installation

The system combines a high-density-flux ferrite woofer motor, neodymium tweeter motor, water-repellent pressed-paper woofer cone, and soft Tetolon tweeter dome. The DPV 165.3 woofer has a 165 mm outer diameter, 144 mm mounting cutout, and 72 mm mounting depth. The compact DPCX 2.3 crossover measures 102 x 76.5 x 32.5 mm.

Confirm that the vehicle accepts a 6.5-inch speaker, a 144 mm cutout, and 72 mm of mounting depth before installation. Mount each woofer in a rigid door or speaker location, position the tweeter where it can be directed toward occupants, and wire the amplifier or head-unit output to the crossover input before connecting its dedicated woofer and tweeter outputs. Observe polarity at every connection and use the crossover supplied for this system.
