The Cerwin Vega VMAX12D2 is a 12-inch passive car subwoofer designed to add substantial low-frequency output to a vehicle audio system. Its dual 2-ohm voice coils give installers wiring flexibility when matching the subwoofer to a compatible external amplifier. It is suited to custom bass upgrades in cars, trucks, and SUVs where an enclosure and dedicated amplification are part of the system plan.

With 1,000 watts RMS power handling and 2,000 watts maximum power handling, the VMAX12D2 is built for systems intended to play at elevated output levels. The 14 mm Xmax specification supports significant cone travel for low-frequency reproduction. Its 29.1 Hz free-air resonance and 12-inch cone area make it a practical choice for bass-focused music systems.

The VMAX12D2 uses a treated semi-pressed pulped cone and treated foam surround. These components are supported by an oversized spider and a 3-inch black-coated voice coil intended for higher thermal capability. A shorting ring and Klippel DA-optimized motor and suspension symmetry are part of the subwoofer's motor-system design.

A heavy-duty cast-aluminum basket provides a rigid foundation for the moving assembly, while the elevated motor structure is designed to support cooling. The single-stacked ferrite motor uses a polished bumped backplate, and the subwoofer is fitted with oversized polished black-chrome terminals. Together, these construction details support use in demanding custom car-audio installations.

This model can be installed in either a sealed or ported enclosure, allowing the system to be tailored to the listener's preferred bass character. Its dual 2-ohm coils can be wired in series or parallel, so amplifier load compatibility should be planned before installation. The VMAX12D2 is a component subwoofer and requires a separate amplifier, enclosure, wiring, and installation hardware.

Key Features

  • 1,000W RMS Handling: Supports use with a properly matched high-power subwoofer amplifier.
  • Dual 2-Ohm Voice Coils: Provides series or parallel wiring flexibility for system design.
  • 12-Inch Woofer: Adds low-frequency output to a dedicated car-audio bass system.
  • 14 mm Xmax: Allows substantial linear cone travel for low-frequency operation.
  • Cast-Aluminum Basket: Provides a rigid structure for the cone and motor assembly.
  • Cooling-Focused Motor Design: Elevated motor structure and coated voice coil support thermal management.

Design & Installation

The VMAX12D2 combines a black treated semi-pressed pulped cone with a treated foam surround, oversized spider, and industrial-strength cast-aluminum frame. Its ferrite magnet motor includes a shorting ring, polished bumped backplate, and elevated motor structure. Oversized polished black-chrome terminals provide the connection points for the dual voice coils.

Plan for an 11.02-inch mounting cutout, 5.98-inch mounting depth, and 12.79-inch overall diameter before selecting or building an enclosure. Cerwin Vega documentation supports sealed and ported applications; published enclosure guidance lists 1.25 cubic feet sealed or 1.75 cubic feet ported. Wire the two 2-ohm coils only to an amplifier that is stable at the resulting final impedance, and use a properly configured low-pass crossover and enclosure.
