The Hertz MLK700-3 is a 3-inch two-way component speaker system designed to cover the midrange and high-frequency portion of an advanced car-audio installation. It combines ML 700.3 extended midrange drivers, ML 280.3 tweeters, and dedicated MLCX 2 TM.3 passive crossover networks. This configuration is intended for systems that need focused mid-high reproduction while using separate larger drivers for bass and mid-bass duties.

This system is suited to enthusiasts building a multi-amplified front stage rather than replacing a conventional full-range door speaker. Hertz specifies it for use with ML 1650.3 or ML 1800.3 Legend woofers in an actively filtered configuration. The system has a 4-ohm nominal impedance and handles 100 watts continuous or 200 watts peak power.

The MLK700-3 covers a specified 200 Hz to 28 kHz frequency range, with the passive network crossing the midrange and tweeter at 4.5 kHz. The compact 70 mm midrange uses an exponential V-cone profile intended to support broad dispersion through the upper midrange. The separate 35 mm dome tweeter extends the system's upper-frequency capability while allowing more flexible placement.

Its ML 700.3 midrange uses a pressed-pulp cone with cotton fibres, a Boundary Free IIR rubber surround, and a neodymium motor. The midrange also uses low-carbon-content CNC-machined plates, a copper-covered central pole, and a one-layer voice coil. For the tweeter, Hertz uses a Tetolon fiber dome, neodymium motor, copper short-circuit ring, and a die-cast aluminum faceplate.

The included MLCX 2 TM.3 crossover provides practical tonal adjustment after installation. Its Mid-Notch selector offers 0, -4, and -6 dB settings, while the tweeter level can be selected at +2, 0, or -2 dB. This makes the system adaptable to different mounting positions and the acoustic character of the vehicle cabin.

Key Features

  • 3-Inch Two-Way System: Combines a 70 mm extended midrange and 35 mm dome tweeter.
  • Dedicated Passive Crossover: Separates midrange and tweeter duties at 4.5 kHz.
  • Mid-Notch Adjustment: Offers three midrange contour settings for vehicle-specific tuning.
  • Tweeter Level Control: Provides +2, 0, and -2 dB adjustment positions.
  • V-Cone Midrange Profile: Uses an exponential cone geometry for wide mid-high dispersion.
  • Premium Driver Materials: Uses neodymium motors, cotton-fibre pulp, Tetolon, and aluminum parts.

Design & Installation

The ML 700.3 midrange uses a three-spoke aluminum-alloy basket with built-in venting, a CNC-machined diamond-cut basket edge, and a supplied die-cast aluminum grille. Its cone is made from pressed pulp reinforced with cotton fibres, while the tweeter uses a CNC-machined aluminum frame and rear chamber with a die-cast aluminum faceplate. The crossover network uses 160V ultra-low-DF polyester bi-metallized film capacitors, air-wound copper inductors, and wirewound resistors.

Plan this set as part of a component front-stage installation, with each crossover connected between the amplifier and its matching ML 700.3 midrange and ML 280.3 tweeter. Hertz's suggested setup specifies a 250 Hz high-pass filter at 12 dB per octave at the amplifier for the MLK 700.3 system. Verify available mounting space before installation: the ML 700.3 is listed at 87.8 mm overall diameter, 74 mm cutout diameter, and 41.3 mm mounting depth.
